Bob Arum: Fury’s Entertainment Value Drove His Fortune, Retirement Now Best

Promoter Bob Arum says he thinks former WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury should stay retired and NOT resume his career. Arum feels that the soon-to-be 37-year-old Fury (34-2-1, 24 KOs) has “had enough” of the sport.

Financial Security

Bob notes that Fury has accumulated an enormous fortune in the last few years of his career and is not want of money. Indeed, according to Celebrity Net Worth, Fury’s treasure chest is estimated at $250 million. That dough isn’t a measure of how great Fury is, but rather, his ability to drum interest in his fights by being an entertainer outside of the ring.

All that money for a heavyweight would be sunk to the bottom by many of the contenders in the division. It just shows you how important it is for fighters to be clowns outside of the ring. Of course, the wily match-making is equally essential to create a manufactured pseudo star like Fury. It’s all about packaging a product to sell to the public, who enjoy WWE-esque characters.

Fury was pretty average as a fighter, having only beat two notable names in his career, 39-year-old Wladimir Klitschko and Deontay Wilder. Fury made a colossal fortune off those two wins. The careful matchmaking done for Fury during his career kept him from being picked off early on by dangerous sharks like Anthony Joshua.

Arum: Retire Rich

“I think Tyson Fury owes it to himself and his family to remain happily retired. I believe he has a lot in front of him because he is a good communicator, and he is an entertainer,” said Bob Arum to Sky Sports Boxing bout Tyson Fury needing to stay retired.

“I don’t think he should step in the ring again because I think he’s had enough, and fortunately, in the last few years of his career, he earned so much money that his family, himself are never going to want for money.

“I would advise him never to go back into the ring but to make himself useful as a spokes person because he can communicate extraordinarily well. People are intrigued by him and I think he can do a lot of good,” said Arum about Fury.

Fury has lost his last two fights to Oleksandr Usyk and appears visibly older than 40. Although he’s lived a clean life recently, his genetic age clock has kicked in, transforming him into a middle-aged person. The way Fury has performed in his last three fights, he won’t do well if he faces any of the top heavyweights, who would clean him out.
