Derek Chisora, At 41, Plans Retirement Fight Against Daniel Dubois For IBF Heavyweight Championship, Amidst Controversy Over His Path To Mandatory Status

Derek Chisora says his last fight of his 18-year pro career will be against IBF heavyweight champion Daniel Dubois once the fight is ordered by the sanctioning body on April 22nd.

The 41-year-old journeyman Chisora (36-13, 23 KOs) told The Ring that the last fight of his career will be against IBF champion Dubois (22-2, 21 KOs), and he already has his ringwalk mapped out.

Chisora’s Path to Title

Despite being horribly washed up for many years, Chisora has been able to worm his way into two world title shots ahead of far more worthy and talented younger contenders. To become the IBF mandatory for Dubois’s title, Chisora beat Otto Wallin and Joe Joyce. Chisora’s face looked like he’s trampled in his victory over Wallin, who is not a puncher but is a lot younger at 34.

Dubois-Chisora fight makes the IBF look like a two-bit organization, as they’re too lenient in allowing old, washed-up fighters climb their rankings ahead of younger contenders that they would have no chance of beating. Chisora won’t beat any of the top 15 fighters if the IBF’s rankings are done based on actual talent.

You can’t put Chisora in with #14 IBF-ranked Richard Torrez Jr. and expect him to make it out of the second round. Torrez Jr. would destroy Chisora. That’s the whole problem with the IBF’s rankings. They make no sense, and it’s bad for the integrity of the sport, allowing an old millionaire journeyman with 13 losses to climb to the mandatory position to challenge Dubois for his IBF title. If the IBF wants to do Chisora a favor, they can give him an old watch as a retirement gift, but NOT a world title shot.

“Derek Chisora was ranked #2 with the IBF. He got in that position by beating Otto Wallin. Martin Bakole was ranked #1. Becaue he came in and fought Joseph Parker and lose, he’s now lost his spot, and Derek Has been pushed up one [to the #1 spot with the IBF],” said Ade Oladipo to talkSport Boxing about how the 41-year-old journeyman Derek Chisora has put himself in position to challenge Daniel Dubois for his IBF heavyweight title.

“Chisora, because of his last two victories against Joe Joyce and Otto Wallin, has almost made himself as an opponent really and pushed himself up to the #1 position. I would have wanted Chisora to retire a long time ago, but the fact is, he’s still winning [against tomato can opposition, Otto Wallin, Gerald Washington, 42, Joe Joyce, 39 and Kubrat Pulev, 43]. ‘I beat Otto Wallin, I beat Joe Joyce, and I still got a lot more in the tank.’”

Fury’s Title Gift

Former WBC Heavyweight Champion Tyson Fury gave Chisora an undeserved title shot on December 3, 2022 for old time’s sake because they were friends. Derek had lost three out of his last four fights going into that fight, which is the fight seem even more pathetic. How often do you see fighter given a title shot with a 1-3 record?

It’s hard to believe how wealthy the journeyman Chisora is. According to The Sun, Derek’s net worth is $15 million, which is an absurd number for a fighter who has never won a world title and lost 13 fights. His best wins have come against mostly older fighters who would have destroyed him if they were younger.
