Boxing Results: Zepeda Earns Hard-Fought Majority Decision Over Farmer; Collazo Scores Dramatic KO In Cancun

WBC interim Lightweight champion William Zepeda won a 12-round majority decision over the former IBF Super Featherweight champion Tevin Farmer on Saturday night in the main event at the Cancun, Quintana Roo, Mexico.

The southpaw Zepeda, 33-0 (27) won a 12-round majority decision over Farmer, 33-8-1 (8). In the first round, it was close, as Zepeda may have pulled it out. In the second round, it was all Zepeda, having hurt Farmer in the final seconds. In the third round, Zepeda continued putting the pressure on Farmer, who countered when he could.

In the fourth round’s first two minutes, it was all Zepeda going to the body. In the final minute, Farmer came back, having Zepeda hurt. In the final seconds, it was Zepeda rallying. In the fifth round, Zepeda had Farmer backing up the entire round when, in the final seconds, Farmer countered Zepeda with a left uppercut on the chin.

In the sixth round, when it seems Farmer is hurt, he comes back with uppercuts, stopping Zepeda in his tracks. In the seventh through the ninth rounds, Zepeda again outworked Farmer.

In the tenth round, Farmer countered Zepeda well. In the eleventh round, Farmer countered well until the final seconds, when once again, his tape needed to be re-wrapped.

In the twelfth and final round, it looked like Farmer scored a knockdown after a minute, but Referee Mike Griffin called it a slip. Farmer had his best round of the fight, trying to pull it out while being outscored almost three to one.

Scores 114-114, 116-112 and 115-113.

In Co-Main Event WBA Super World and WBO Mini champ southpaw Oscar ‘El Pupilo’ Collazo, 12-0 (9) knocked out southpaw Edwin ‘Canito’ Cano, 13-3-1 (4) at 1:12 of the fifth round of a scheduled 12 rounds.

In the first two rounds, Collazo had the edge, outworking Cano. In the fourth round, Collazo had hurt Cano. Cano came back, landing half a dozen punches.

Collazo landed a body shot in the fifth round and pushed Cano to the canvas as Referee Miguel Canul counted Cano out.

Flyweight Joselito ‘El Huracan’ Velazquez, 21-1-1 (13) defeated Adolfo ‘Lee’ Castillo, 12-5-2 (7) over 10 rounds. In the first round, due to a clash of heads, Velazquez was cut outside of the right eyebrow. In the third round, Velazquez landed a right on the chin, rocking Castillo. Again, another clash of heads due to Castillo coming in with his head, which caused him a point.

In the fourth round, the fans started cheering for Velazquez, who out-worked Castillo. In the sixth round Velazquez landed a pair of lefts to the body of Castillo. In the seventh round another clash of heads and Castillo was cut on the forehead.

In the eighth round, Velazquez cut this time on the left eyebrow. In the tenth and final round Velazquez had Castillo hurt in the final minute. Celestino Castro was the referee.

The scores 100-89, 100-89, and 97-92

Cruiserweight Rob ‘ROBZ’ Sirwan Safar, 18-0 (13) stopped Roberto Silva, 13-3 (7), at 2:55 of the fifth round of a scheduled 10 rounds.

In the second and third rounds Safar rocked Silva with rights on the chin. In the fifth round a right from Safar on the chin knocked out the mouthpiece of Silva followed by a combination having him hurt as the Referee called a halt.

WBC World Mini champion Yokasta Valle, 33-3, (10) defeated by split decision over former WBA, WBC, WBO Fly champ Marlen Esparza, 15-3 (1) over 10×2 rounds.

In the first round, Esparza was the aggressor, with Valle countering mostly with jabs. From the second through the fourth rounds, Valle outlanded especially with overhand rights.

In the fifth through the seventh, Esparza came back well enough to take several rounds. In the eighth round, Valle came back, having the better hand speed to win the round. In the ninth round Esparza came back with more landed. In the tenth and final round, both had their moments.

The scores were 96-94 for Esparza and 97-93, 97-93 for Valle.
