Six months ago, Whittaker vs. Cameron 1 ended in a six-round technical draw after the two tumbled out of the ring in the sixth round on October 12th in Riyadh. The 2020 Olympic Silver medalist Whittaker (8-0-1, 5 KOs) was too hurt to continue. So, the fight was halted, and it went to the scorecards.

Fan Perceptions

It appeared that Cameron had exposed him 100% in the fight, showing that he was another example of a former amateur talent struggling to make the transition into the pro game. They’re two different sports. Even if Whittaker wins the rematch, it’s already clear that he’s not going to enjoy the same kind of success in the pros as he did in the amateurs. He can still make good coin as a domestic-level fighter in the same realm as Conor Benn and Chris Eubank Jr.

Many fans felt that Whittaker was faking his injury because the veteran Cameron (23-6-1, 10 KOs) had taken over the fight. With the way Whittaker, 27, was getting lit up by Cameron, it appeared that he was heading toward a knockout loss.

“I know all the work has been done, and I’ve not cut any corners. I’ve ticked every box. When you know that, you look good in the ring,” said Ben Whittaker to Boxing Social about his preparation for his rematch with Liam Cameron. “In every walk of life, you get critics. They’re only talking because I am that guy.”

Whittaker sounds deluded, thinking that the only reason people are criticizing him is that they view him as “that guy.” They’re roasting him because they saw that mentally he was afraid, and quit when the going got tough against Cameron. Outwardly, Whittaker is tough, but inwardly, pure jelly.

“If I go out and stop him in the first round, people are still going to have a lot to say. For me, it’s go there and win and just let him talk,” said Whittaker about Cameron. “He’s a celebrity now. He’s doing his little podcast now, and fair play to him. He deserves that spotlight now. But after I beat him, I hope you guys go and interview him after as well.

“When I first went in there, he’s going off what other people are saying, ‘Oh, you can’t really punch,’” said Whittaker about his coach, Andy Lee. “When I started hitting the pads, he went, ‘Why didn’t you do this in the ring?’ I said, ‘I don’t know. I like to mess around.’ So, that opened up his eyes. When he saw the power there, we’ve been working on some things. So, you’ll see.”
