“Calm Before The Storm? Oscar De La Hoya Sees Focused Ryan Garcia Delivering Early Knockout Against Reckless Rolando Romero

Promoter Oscar De La Hoya notes that Ryan Garcia’s state of mind is a lot calmer than it has been in the past, going into his fight against Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero in 12 days on May 2nd. De La Hoya predicts Garcia-Rolly will be “action-packed” from the get-go, but will end quickly with a third-round knockout for Garcia.
PPV Price
The event will be shown live on DAZN PPV for $59.99 on May 2nd. DAZN is offering a “Knockout Weekend Bundle” for $90 with the Canelo Alvarez vs. William Scull. That comes out to $45 per event instead of the $59.99.
Oscar says Rolly’s habit of lunging at his opponents, fighting recklessly, will put him in the line of fire for Kingry’s left hook power punch. That’s the one that he’s used to subdue 20 of his 25 opponents. Ryan came close to knocking out Devin Haney in their fight last April after dropping him three times.
Devin hasn’t fought since, and some believe he’s still having nightmares about the left hooks that knocked him off his high horse. He and especially his dad, Bill Haney, have been getting a little too big for their britches. Ryan brought them back down to Earth among the ordinary folks.
Boots Comparison
Turki should have insisted that Ryan fight someone better than Rolly Romero, because this fight is too easy for Kingry for it to be considered a must-watch for fans. A better option would have been Karen Chukhadzhian, the contender who twice gave Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennnis massive headaches. That would have given boxing fans a chance to compare Garcia to Boots.
“We are two weeks away from Ryan Garcia’s return. He had his media day here in San Diego this week. You had the chance to catch up with him. How do you feel he’s looking at this point?” said commentator Chris Mannix to DAZN Boxing, talking to Golden Boy promoter Oscar De La Hoya about Ryan Garcia’s first fight back after a year layoff, going against Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero on May 2nd.
Calm Kingry?
“I like the fact that he’s calm. He’s actually cool and collected,” said De La Hoya about Ryan Garcia’s state of mind. “I’ve never seen Ryan like this. Obviously, it’s the calm before the storm. We have a couple of weeks left before his fight on May 2nd, but I see Ryan focused, I see him confident. On May 2nd against Rolly, it’s going to be one of those fights that you want to watch.”
Ryan Garcia didn’t seem very “calm and collected” in this week’s Fatal Fury roundtable, arguing back and forth with Devin Haney, revealing his conspiracy theory for why he tested positive for a banned PED last April. It looked like Ryan was about to blow a rod, turning red in the face, pointing the finger of blame at Haney for his failing a drug test.
“You want to stay glued to your TV because it’s going to be action-packed, it’s going to be fast, but it’s going to be quick,” said Oscar.
“You told reporters this week that you’re expecting a knockout inside three rounds. Why are you confident of that?” said Mannix about De La Hoya predicting an early victory for Kingry over Rolly.
“Styles make fights. Rolly, don’t get me wrong, he can fight, and obviously, he’s been fighting his whole life. It kind of reminds me of Mayorga-De La Hoya,” said Oscar. “You have a strong guy. He hits; he’s a power-puncher. He doesn’t care and comes lunging at you, left and right punches from everywhere. But Ryan Garcia will keep it cool, keep it calm, and when he has to fire, he will fire and knock him out.”
