Fans Roasting ‘Fake Belt’ Fight: Ryan Garcia And Rolando Romero To Contest Disputed WBA Title

Ryan Garcia is being roasted by fans on X, with them saying that he’s fighting for a “fake belt,” battling for the WBA ‘regular’ welterweight title against Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero on May 2nd at Times Square, in New York City. They view this as utterly pathetic for the WBA to have their secondary title contested by Garcia and Rolly.
Critics argue that Ryan Garcia will not be viewed as a world champion if he wins the WBA secondary belt. There’s no prestige in capturing the ‘regular’ belt, because it’s seen as a trinket belt.
‘Mickey Mouse’ Belt
The WBA’s Championship Committee voted yesterday to have their WBA secondary 147-lb title on the line for Ryan’s fight against Rolly (16-2, 13 KOs). That belt will be up for grabs, and the winner will fight the upgraded WBA Super Champion Errol Spence
Fans on social media state that Kingry (24-1, 20 KOs) doesn’t deserve to fight for the WBA secondary title, considering that he tested positive for a banned PED from his last fight against Devin Haney on April 20th.
They view the WBA ‘regular’ 147-lb title as illegitimate, and a Mickey Mouse” title, put up for grabs to validate the Garcia-Romero fight in a cheapened way. In other words, create artificial hype with a pretend belt on the line. Fans believe that the WBA ‘regular’ title shouldn’t even exist because it confuses people. Ennis holds the WBA title.
The timing of the WBA creating their secondary belt is not ideal, because there are a lot of fans who are paying attention to Ryan’s comeback fight against Romero. Considering how popular Garcia is, it gives the impression that the World Boxing Association is giving him special treatment.
Next Face or Favored?
Some people see Ryan as the next ‘Face of Boxing’ in the U.S. because of his fame. Canelo Alvarez has gotten old and no longer takes risky fights. He’s clearly on the way out.
So, Kingry is the next marketable superstar, which is why it’s not surprising that the WBA Championship Committee has voted to have a ‘regular’ 147-lb title fought for in Garcia’s headliner clash against Romero on May 2nd on DAZN PPV.
