Gabriela Fundora Dominates Badillo And Is Now Contemplating Going Down A Weight Class

On the night of April 19th at the Frontwave Arena in Oceanside, California, the undisputed flyweight champion Gabriela Fundora stopped Marilyn Badillo (19-1-1, 3 KOs) in the 7th round.

Boxing is a sport that categorizes fighters by levels, and on fight night, Fundora proved she was levels above Badillo. The fight was never in doubt as Fundora was able to do whatever she wanted to do on the offensive end.

In the opening round of the bout, the southpaw Gabriela Fundora was in complete control, as she routinely pressed forward and landed the straight left hand. Marilyn Badillo’s plan was to push Fundora back, but in the 1st round, Badillo stayed fighting off the back foot.

The 5’3″ Marilyn Badillo was facing the ultimate challenge, as she was going up against an undisputed champion who had noticeable physical advantages. Gabriela Fundora held a 6-inch height advantage and an 8-inch reach advantage.

In the second round, Badillo was staying low, trying to slip and roll around the shots, but Fundora was still able to connect with the jab, the left hand, and sharp combinations. Badillo was overmatched from both a physical and a talent standpoint, but she kept trying to generate offense.

Badillo landed a solid overhand right in the fourth and a couple of good body shots in the fifth round. Fundora was walking her opponent down in the sixth as she landed heavy shots to the head and body.

Fundora seemed to be going for the knockout in the 7th as she proceeded to land a series of hard power shots. With 24 seconds left to go in the 7th round, Fundora stopped Badillo when she connected with a left hand that made Badillo collapse down to one knee.

Gabriela Fundora (16-0, 8 KOs) is the reigning queen of the 112-pound division. During her post-fight interview, Fundora mentioned her interest in regards to moving down to 108.

Currently at 108, Evelyn Bermudez holds the WBO and IBF belts. If Gabriela Fundora decides to move down, she will most likely place the unified champion Bermudez on her radar.

At the age of 23, the undisputed flyweight champion Gabriela “Sweet Poison” Fundora has already conquered one division. If she decides to go down to junior-flyweight, she could have a chance of joining Claressa Shields and Katie Taylor as the only female boxers to go undisputed in two divisions.
