Carl Froch Backs The Bigger, More Experienced Chris Eubank Jr. To Defeat Conor Benn In London Clash

Carl Froch is picking the naturally bigger, more proven fighter, middleweight Chris Eubank Jr., to defeat Conor Benn tonight in their fight at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London. Froch says Eubank Jr. (34-3, 25 KOs) is “too big” for the unproven Benn (23-0, 14 KOs).

Although Froch notes that the 35-year-old Eubank Jr. isn’t at a world level, he still possesses too much size and ability for Benn. He feels that Conor has done zero during his career, and his best win came against 37-year-old Chris Algieri in 2021. By that time in his career, he was faded and had nothing left.

Is It About the Money?

There is a strong belief among some fans on social media that Benn’s primary purpose for his career is to capitalize on his famous father’s name to make money without working his way up the way normal fighters do. As such, we haven’t seen Conor Benn matched against any of these welterweights:

– Jaron Ennis
– Brian Norman Jr.
– Shakhram Giyasov
– Karen Chukhadzhian

The chances are high that Benn would lose to all of those fighters, and his career would be over with if his promoter, Eddie Hearn, had chosen to test him. That reinforces the belief fans have that Benn’s career is only about making money.

Froch’s criticism of Benn echoes what many boxing fans say about him. He’s fought no one and has been carefully maneuvered by his promoters from day one. He’s been a pro for close to 10 years, and the only notable fighter on his resume is Algieri. That was four years ago.

“I think Chris Eubank Jr. should be too big for Conor Benn. Eubank Jr. isn’t a bad fighter at super middleweight, but not world level,” said Carl Froch on his YouTube channel, giving his thoughts on tonight’s fight between the two fighters in London. “Conor Benn has done nothing. He hasn’t proven anything. He hasn’t beaten anyone of any note.”

Froch doesn’t mention that Eubank Jr might be weakened enough for Benn to win due to the combination of making weight and the 10-lb rehydration clause. He hasn’t been active enough in his career to achieve 160 without great effort, and he’s in his mid-30s. Eubank Jr. is a living fossil in boxing terms.

Benn’s Shallow Record

“The knockout of Chris Algieri proved nothing because Chris Algieri was finished [in 2021]. That’s his best win. I do think Conor Benn has a bright future, whether he wins this fight or not. He’s only 28 years old,” said Froch.

“He can go on and do something. It’ll be interesting to see how he performs. Hopefully, he doesn’t get badly injured or damaged or knocked out, and his confidence gets wiped out. That’s what happened to [welterweight] Kell Brook when he stepped up against Golovkin [in 2016] in a weight division [middleweight] he shouldn’t have been in. He got his eyesocket fractured. Jumping around in weight ruins a fighter’s career,” said Froch.
