Riyadh Rumbles To Discontent: Fans Slam Canelo Alvarez’s ‘Disappointing’ Undercard And Mismatch Against William Scull

Fans on social media are trashing Canelo Alvarez’s “disappointing” fight against little-known IBF super middleweight champion William Scull this Saturday, May 3rd, with the event starting at 11 pm ET / 8 pm PT, live DAZN PPV for $59.99 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Canelo’s co-feature this Saturday is the rematch between recently knocked out super middleweight Jaime Munguia and Bruno Surace. That fight hasn’t created any buzz with fans, meaning it was a waste to include it in such a prominent position in hopes of attracting fans to purchase the event.
The event can be purchased along with this Friday’s Ryan Garcia vs. Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero card as part of the Knockout Weekend bundle for $90.
Lackluster Support for Canelo’s Show
– Canelo Álvarez vs. William Scull
– Bruno Surace vs. Jaime Munguia
– Martin Bakole vs. Efe Ajagba
– Badou Jack vs. Ryan Rozicki
– Marco Verde vs. Michel Polina
– Brayan Leon vs. Aaron Guerrero
Mismatch in Riyadh
If the idea is for Canelo to create fake marketing hype for his circus fight against 37-year-old Terence Crawford for October, he should be fighting David Benavidez. That would be the perfect way for Alvarez to build what Turki Alalshikh calls “The big fight” against Crawford. Canelo doesn’t want to fight Benavidez, though, because there’s too much risk. Terence isn’t popular enough among casuals that purchase PPV events in the U.S for this to be a “big fight.” What casuals want is for Canelo to show some courage and fight Benavidez.
People feel that the justification for Canelo (62-2-2, 39 KOs) using to fight the obscure, badly-flawed William Scull (23-0, 9 KOs), saying it’s for the undisputed 168-lb championship to create more interest in the Terence Crawford match in October, isn’t enough.
Fans aren’t impressed with fighters that capture undisputed championships nowadays, viewing them as having been maneuvered into those positions with skillful matchmaking by their wily promoters. You see limited fighters like Devin Haney capturing the undisputed title at lightweight.
Undisputed Doesn’t Sell
People see Canelo’s excuse for fighting Scull for the undisputed championship as an excuse to pad his record and get another giant payday without risking his hide against the best. This fight is just a foxhole for Canelo to hide in to avoid Benavidez and the other killers.
Justifying the mismatch on Saturday, as it was for the undisputed title, has fallen on deaf ears with fans, as they no longer care about that title. They see it as being overhyped because the winners are often beatable and not the best.
Fans want to see Canelo fight these killers:
– David Benavidez
– David Morrell
– Diego Pacheco
– Dmitry Bivol
– Artur Beterbiev
– Osleys Iglesias
