Times Square Takeover: Ryan Garcia’s Fiery Words For Romero And A Father-Son “Whipping” Of The Haneys

Ryan Garcia and Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero made their Grand Arrivals in New York City today for their main event fight this Friday, May 2nd, on DAZN PPV from Times Square. Ryan (24-1, 20 KOs) says he’s going to be focused and “ready to kill” when he gets inside the ring with Rolly (16-2, 13 KOs).

Interestingly, Garcia veered the conversation away from Romero and did a lot of talking about his hoped-for next fight against Devin Haney in October. He made it clear that’s the fight he wants in a rematch against Devin, and he says he’s going to “put a whipping” on his dad, Bill Haney, too. That would be funny. Kingry, beating the living daylights out of Bill and Devin.

Grand Entrance

Garcia has to beat Romero first, and that’s not going to be easy because the guy can punch. Also, Ryan is coming off a year-long layoff, and he may not be in the same form he was in when he whipped Haney last April.

“I’m coming back with a bang. I’m not here to play no games come Friday night. I can’t. I’ve got a huge fight coming up next [against Devin Haney],” said Ryan Garcia during today’s “Grand Arrivals in New York City for his headliner fight this Friday, May 2nd, against Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero.

During today’s face off, Romero looked dead serious, and you could tell that he really wants this fight. He knows his career opportunities will disappear if he loses. He’s not going to keep getting chosen for headliner spots if Ryan knocks him out.

“I’ve got to take him as seriously as I’m fighting Devin. So, we’re going to be prepared 100%. You’re just getting what you’re getting, but I’m still bringing that speed and that power. It’s just what I do,” Ryan continued. “I’m explosive and I’m hungry. I feel the adrenaline right now.”

Rolly is the biggest puncher Ryan will have fought since his loss to Gervonta Davis in April 2023. He didn’t handle Gervonta’s power too well, and he might not with Rolly’s either. We’ll find out early if Ryan can take Rolly’s power shots because he’s going to start quickly like he always does.

“Fight week, I’m feeling how I always feel; just focused and ready to kill. Oh yeah, most definitely,” said Garcia when asked if he’s coming for the knockout against Rolly. “I’m not coming for it, but when I throw, usually they go down. I got him. He’s going to be coming after me. I’m going to be coming after him. It’s going to be a great night.”

Ryan Garcia must do a knockout Rolly early because this is a guy that he can’t afford to leave inside the ring for long. He hits too hard.

In the co-feature on Friday’s career, Haney will be fighting Jose Ramirez in a 12-round contest. Also on the card is Teofimo Lopez defending his WBO light welterweight title against Arnold Barboza Jr.

Whipping Intent

“Oh yeah, I’m willing to show. I can’t wait. I’m going to put a whipping on his dad [Bill Haney], too,” said Garcia. “That’s really who I want to put a whipping on, but Devin can get it again. I’m going to do the same thing as I did last time. Maybe we can run it back in New York, too. Why not? Bring it back and do what I did to him last time.

“Yeah, this has got to be the biggest fight of my career. It’s a historic night, nd it brings everything. Yeah, this is the biggest fight of my life,” said Kingry.
