Undercard Duty: Diego Pacheco To Fight Trevor McCumby On July 19th In Texas

Super middleweight contender Diego Pacheco’s next fight against Trevor McCumby has been given undercard treatment, placed on the Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez vs. Phumelele Cafu card on July 19th on DAZN at The Star in Frisco, Texas on July 19th.

Undercard Again

Pacheco (23-0, 18 KOs) would be headlining his card if he were facing one of the dangerous 168-pounders:

  • Christian Mbilli
  • Osleys Iglesias

It’s unclear if Pacheco’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, attempted to get one of those talents. Perhaps Hearn feels it’s too early to throw the 24-year-old Pacheco in with Mbilli or the Cuban Iglesias because those guys have a lot of power and offensive ability that would test him.

With Diego ranked #1 with the WBO at 168, Hearn would be taking a big risk by matching him against one of the killer sharks in the division and having him potentially get exposed.

If Pacheco stays unbeaten long enough to get a title shot against Canelo, he’ll make millions from the fight. It won’t matter if his career plummets after that. The way things are looking now, Canelo will NEVER fight Pacheco because he’s Mexican and he doesn’t like to fight his people. Additionally, Pacheco is so unremarkable. He has no personality, and his resume is barren of names, filled with lesser opposition from top to bottom.

Pacheco is coming off a wide 12-round unanimous decision win over previously unbeaten Steven Nelson on January 25th. He dominated the 36-year-old, who had never fought anyone of note in compiling an inflated 20-0 record.

McCumby Matchup

Using McCumby (28-1, 21 KOs) as Pacheco’s opponent for the July 19th card isn’t a good look. McCumby, 32, was knocked out in his last fight by Caleb Plant in the ninth round on the undercard of Canelo vs. Edgar Berlanga on September 14th last year.

It’s pointless for Pacheco to fight McCumby immediately after that loss. Hearn has obviously chosen McCumby because fans will recognize him from his last fight, and it gives them the chance to compare Pacheco with Plant. The problem is, there’s no gain for Pacheco from beating a fighter who is coming off a bad knockout loss. He’s not going to get any credit from a victory.

“I’ve been working my entire life to get to this point in my career where I’m facing the best fighters in the world,” said Pacheco.

What is Diego talking about here? McCumby is NOT “the best” in the world at 168. He was just knocked out by the finesse fighter Caleb Plant. Pacheco needs to take a step up and fight already if he wants to get the attention of Canelo and Turki Alalshikh.

The reason Pacheco has been ignored by Alvarez and left out in the cold is that his opposition has been mediocre, and he lacks charisma.

Diego obviously can’t do anything about lacking charisma, because that’s something you’re born with. However, he can put a fire under Hearn’s backside and tell him to match him against Iglesias and Mbilli, so he can secure a fight against Canelo before he retires.
