Terence Crawford Predicts “Tough Fight” For Canelo Alvarez Against William Scull, Eyes Potential Undisputed Clash In September

Terence Crawford expects IBF super middleweight champion William Scull to make it a “tough fight” for unified three-belt champion Canelo Alvarez in their undisputed championship bout this Saturday, May 3rd, in Riyadh.
Crawford says that a lot of fans are giving Scull (23-0, 9 KOs) no chance of winning the fight, but he sees him making it a challenging fight for WBA, WBC, and WBO 168-lb champion Canelo (62-2-2, 39 KOs) in the headliner, live on DAZN PPV. Terence still thinks Canelo will win the fight, but it’ll be competitive as long as it lasts.
Crawford’s Hope
It’s unclear whether Crawford is speaking from a point of preference for Canelo to win rather than believing it. He needs the Mexican star to be victorious against Scull for their fight to happen in September. If Canelo is beaten, that’ll mess up Turki Alalshikh’s plans for making what he calls “The Big fight” between Alvarez and Crawford.
It’s not the fight that fans want to see, but it’s what Turki wants. The public wants to see Canelo fight David Benavidez, not the 38-year-old Crawford. Fans would want to see Bud if he moved up to 168 and proved himself by beating Benavidez, David Morrell, and Christian Mbilli. He’s being allowed to skip those sharks and go straight to Canelo, which will hurt interest in the contest.
“I’m feeling good about the fight. It’s going to be a tough fight for Canelo. I think a lot of people are writing Scull off. I think he’s going to make it competitive,” said Terence Crawford to Ring Magazine about Saturday’s fight between Canelo Alvarez and William Scull in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
“I think he’s going to make it competitive, and I do think Canelo is going to get the job done. He’s going to secure the victory. I just hope he gets out of the ring with no injuries and be ready for September,” said Crawford, hoping that Alvarez wins and is healthy enough to face him in September. “I’ll be ringside.”
Crawford failed to say what he’ll do if Canelo loses. Does he wait for him to avenge the loss to Scull in September, and then fight him in May 2026? If Crawford does that, he’ll be coming off a two-year layoff and will be coming in on 39. Who wants to see Canelo fighting Bud under those conditions?
