Haney’s Viral “What Happened?” Amidst His Own Shaky Win And Rematch Doubts

A clip of Devin Haney gloating after Ryan Garcia’s upset loss to Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero last night has gone viral from his headliner fight at Times Square in New York. Haney was shown laughing alongside his dad, Bill Haney, asking Ryan, “What happened?” Ryan was knocked down by the heavy-handed Rolly in round two and lost a 12-round unanimous decision.

Garcia Loss, Haney Exposed
Devin (32-0, 15 KOs) wasn’t in the position to act like that after his lackluster performance in the co-feature bout against the shot-looking former 140-lb champion Jose Ramirez, in which he’d run from him for 12 rounds to win an ugly boo-filled decision.
Haney looked overly cautious against Ramirez (29-3, 18 KOs), throwing few punches due to his movement and worry of being nailed. Only 503 punches were thrown in the entire 12-round fight, making it one of the lowest.
Devin’s effort in his welterweight debut showed that he won’t be a factor in the 147-lb division unless he’s strategically matched like he was against Ramirez. Haney can’t be matched against welterweights like Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis, Brian Norman Jr., or newly crowned WBA ‘regular’ Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero without getting beaten. He showed against Ramirez that he’s not physically or mentally equipped to fight at welterweight.
The right reaction from Haney should have been sadness, because Ryan Garcia’s defeat puts their planned rematch for October in serious doubt. They were both supposed to win their tune-up fights at Times Square for their rematch later this year.
Turki’s Tough Call
Turki Alalshikh will decide whether to go through with his plans for the Garcia-Haney 2 fight, but I don’t know how he can after these two performances from them. Fans don’t want to see Haney running around for 12 rounds, playing it safe, hoping to get a decision against Ryan. It’s pointless for Garcia to move on from his loss to Rolly Romero without trying to redeem himself in a rematch.
