Jake Paul & Julio César Chávez Jr. Ready To Drag Boxing Through The Dirt Again

Jake Paul (11-1, 7 KOs), the human embodiment of clickbait, is back to suck more oxygen out of the boxing world on June 28 at Honda Center in Anaheim. And who’s his latest co-star in this pantomime? Julio César Chávez Jr. (54-6-1, 34 KOs), aka boxing’s biggest cautionary tale, whose main skill these days seems to be failing upwards. DAZN PPV is more than happy to flog this sideshow for top dollar. Ten rounds, cruiserweight (200 lbs), 10oz gloves—the usual circus, different day. Golden Boy Promotions is along for the ride too, proving once again that money > dignity.

And don’t worry—MVP’s VIP “experience” is back, in case you want to throw a few grand at getting closer to the trainwreck.

Jake Paul, professional loudmouth, belted out this gem:
“I just defeated the baddest man on the planet, and now I’m going against a former champion who conman Canelo couldn’t finish. Chávez Jr. is Mexican, but I, El Gallo De Dorado, have the will and heart of the great Mexican fighters.”

Right, mate. First of all, you fought a near-60-year-old Tyson who was one bad cramp away from calling it off. Not exactly peak competition. And now you’re puffing your chest because you’ve lined up Chávez Jr.—a man who’s been washed so many times he’s basically see-through at this point. Jake’s career has been one long game of “how low can I set the bar and still get paid?” And now he’s acting like taking on boxing’s biggest underachiever is some kind of career-defining moment. Please.

As for Chávez Jr., the walking circus tent, he somehow managed to say with a straight face:
“I feel rejuvenated and 10 years younger. Unfortunately for their Problem Child, they’re going to have a big problem this June.”

Jesus Christ, where to begin? This is the same Chávez Jr. who’s made a career out of missing weight, quitting mid-fight, failing drug tests, and coming up with excuses that would embarrass a school kid. The bloke once refused to weigh in at all before a fight, and let’s not forget when he bailed on a drug test by hiding in his house like a naughty kid dodging homework. His record is stacked, sure—but dig a little and you’ll see it’s propped up by faded names, soft touches, and more scandals than wins. Every time he says, “this is the new me,” you know disaster is around the corner. Betting on him to mess it up somehow isn’t even risky—it’s expected.

Ramirez vs. Dorticós: the only proper fight on this card

While the circus clowns dance around, we do get one fight that actually matters: Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez (47-1, 30 KOs) defending his WBO and WBA cruiserweight belts against Yuniel Dorticós (27-2, 25 KOs). Twelve rounds, 200 lbs, and two real fighters who aren’t interested in Instagram followers or drama. Ramirez has been nothing but class—coming off a beatdown of Chris Billam-Smith—and Dorticós? The guy’s built like a tank with 25 knockouts in 27 fights. He’s here to cause real damage, not take selfies.

Zurdo kept his mouth clean and sharp:
“This fight marks my WBA mandatory, and I know I need to get past this opponent to stay on track in my journey toward greatness.”

And Dorticós? All business:
“My goal is to become a three-time world champion.”

Simple. Straight. No fluff. Funny how the real fighters never need a circus to sell their fights.

Oscar De La Hoya, spinning the hype wheel as always, added:
“Zurdo is built for moments like this. It’s going to be an unforgettable night celebrating the best of Mexican boxing!”
Oscar’s translation: please, for the love of God, watch Zurdo—he’s the only thing keeping this card from being a full-on joke.
