Terence Crawford Believes Skill Set Will Be Deciding Factor In His Bout With Canelo

In the sport of boxing, the phrase “skills pay the bills” is a popular saying, and Terence “Bud” Crawford feels his skills will cover the debt on Saturday night, September 12th, when he challenges the undisputed super-middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.

The matchup is set to take place at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada. For close to seven years, Canelo has competed in and ruled the 168-pound division. On the night of September 12th, Terence Crawford will attempt to make a historic debut as a super-middleweight.

The last time Terence Crawford participated in a historical bout was back in July 2023 when he faced the then unified WBC, WBA, IBF world welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr. In the second round of the Spence vs Crawford mega-fight, Crawford dropped Spence when he connected with a power jab.

After getting dropped, Spence tried to bring the aggression, but every time he made an attempt to go into attack mode, Crawford tagged him with sharp counter punches. Throughout the contest, Bud Crawford’s footwork, timing, and punch placement was impeccable.

With two minutes left to go in the 7th round, Spence was on the attack when Crawford landed a counter right uppercut that sent Spence down to the canvas for a second time. As round 7 was coming to a close, Crawford dropped Spence for a third time when he connected with a sharp right hook.

Late in the 9th round, Crawford landed a flurry of hard shots which forced the referee to step in and put a halt to the contest. With the victory, Terence Crawford made history by becoming the first male boxer to become a two-division undisputed world champion.

Present day, Terence “Bud” Crawford (41-0, 31 KOs) is in a similar position as he is on the verge of facing a boxer who is a pound-for-pound great. With a victory, Crawford will make history by becoming the first male boxer to go undisputed in a third division.

The Terence Crawford naysayers believe that due to the fact that Crawford is moving up two divisions to face Canelo, the weight will be a factor. During his interview with The W.A.D.E Concept, Crawford gave an example in regards to weight not being an issue.

“When you got Usyk fighting Tyson Fury, you know, Tyson Fury was the massive fighter over Usyk, and the bigger guy didn’t win either fight,” Crawford stated.

Terence Crawford is a fighter who has all the tools. He’s a switch-hitter who has a high ring IQ, footwork, hand speed, power in both hands, and he’s an excellent counter puncher.

Crawford has the skills required to defeat Canelo, but the biggest question is, how will he respond to Canelo’s brand of aggression and power? The Canelo fight is a historic match for Crawford, and during his interview, he spoke about the meaning of a victory.

“It would mean everything. It’ll be everything that I worked hard for my whole career coming out in that one moment, that one night of boxing, that everybody got to see the great Terence Crawford do something that was unheard of and unthinkable.”
