Boxing Legend Vasily Lomachenko Announces Retirement

Former three-division world champion Vasily Lomachenko retired today after 12 years in the pro game. The two-time Olympic gold medalist Lomachenko (18-3, 12 KOs) has reportedly burned out on the sport due to injuries, lack of motivation, and wanting to spend time with his family.

Lomachenko Retires: End of Era

Vasily’s record as an amateur is 396-1. Many boxing fans would agree that if the Ukrainian Lomachenko had turned pro earlier, he would have accomplished a lot more because he spent some of his best years in the amateur ranks, capturing medals and dominating.

If Lomachenko had stayed at 126 and 130, where he was more suited in terms of size, he would still be dominating and viewed as the #1 fighter in those weight classes. He was outsized by his opponents at lightweight when he moved up in 2018.

His fight against the much bigger Devin Haney in 2023 was an example of Lomachenko’s lack of size for the 135-lb division. Still, he decided to stay in the weight class rather than returning to 130 after losing a controversial decision to Devin.

Wealthy now and not in need of money, the 37-year-old Loma has decided to hang up his gloves. He last fought a year ago when he knocked out former unified lightweight champion George Kambosos Jr. in the 11th round to capture the vacant IBF 135-lb title on May 12, 2024, in Perth, Australia.

WBA champion Gervonta Davis had hoped to fight Lomachenko in a unification, but the fight failed to happen due to Loma choosing to take the remainder of 2024 off.

With Vasily’s retirement, his IBF lightweight title becomes vacant, and interim champion Raymond Muratalla is expected to be elevated to the full belt holder with that organization. For Top Rank, that’s a positive because he’s with them and it keeps the IBF title in their possession.
