Tyson Fury Declares No Return: ‘Too Old’ For Boxing, Says Gypsy King

Tyson Fury has changed his mind about coming out of retirement, saying he will “Never” return. ‘The Gypsy King’ Fury (34-2-1, 24 KOs) said boxing is a “young man’s game.”

Fury, 36, retired on January 13th, a month after losing to Oleksandr Usyk in their rematch in December 2024. Although Tyson had recently talked about wanting to end his retirement to fight Usyk in a trilogy, he’s changed his mind.

Fury’s Financial Motive?

What we don’t know is whether Turki Alalshikh had no interest in financing a third fight between Fury and Usyk. If he weren’t going to be involved, it would mean Fury’s purse would be dramatically reduced from what he got for his last fight. His take for the rematch with Oleksandr was $75 million to $100 million. If Tyson were to only receive a quarter of that sum without Turki’s involvement, it’s understandable why he would turn up his nose at such a small sum.

Boxing’s Young Man’s Game

“Never. Too old, look at my beard, all gray. Boxing is a young man’s game,” said Tyson Fury to Sky Sports News when asked about his return to the ring to resume his career.

It’s not just the gray beard that makes Fury look old. It’s his face and entire body. He looks like a 50-year-old now, and has been for the last couple of years. He’s aged rapidly since his trilogy fight with Deontay Wilder in 2021. He looked 38-ish back then. Now, Fury looks middle-aged, like someone who should be on the golf course.

The performance by Fury in his rematch with Usyk last December was nowhere near the level he’d been at when he defeated then 39-year-old Wladimir Klitschko in 2015. That was Fury at his best, moving around the ring like a gazelle, leaning against the ropes to avoid getting clobbered by the still faster, more powerful, physically gifted Wladimir.

End of Fury Era

Tyson’s ability to move is gone now, and the fat around his midsection that wasn’t there when he was still youthful in his 20s. Once Fury’s legs were gone, he was just an ordinary ham-and-egger type heavyweight who relied on mauling his opponents. That wouldn’t take him very far against the younger generation of fighters.
