‘Jo Jo’ Diaz Jr. Aims For Bigger Fights With Victory Over Prograis This Saturday

Joseph ‘Jo Jo’ Diaz Jr. views his fight against Regis Prograis this Saturday as an opportunity to get him some bigger fights if he comes out victorious. ‘Jo Jo’ comes into the fight with a 2-6 record since 2021, and he can’t afford to lose Regis. The fight will be shown on DAZN.
The former IBF super featherweight champion Diaz Jr. (34-7-1, 15 KOs) is fighting Prograis (29-3, 24 KOs) in a 10-round fight at 140 on Saturday, August 2nd at the University of Illinois, Chicago.
Diaz – Prograis Fight Preview
Diaz is still young at 32, but he’s not been effective since losing to Devin Haney in 2021. That fight was a negative turning point for him, as he lost to five of his next six opponents. ‘Jo Jo’ did win his last fight, beating Jorge Luis Valencia Diaz by an eight-round unanimous decision last June, but that was against a fighter with a 6-4 record.
“That’s why I see this as an opportunity. It’s broadcast on DAZN as the co-main event on a Golden Boy card. I knew this was an opportunity, and I had to take advantage of it,” said ‘Jo Jo’ Diaz to Fighthype about how a victory over Regis Prograis could propel him into a bigger fight.
Prograis Power Threat
Diaz Jr. has already fought at 140, losing repeatedly in that weight class since 2022. One thing that he has going for him in this fight is that the former WBA and WBC light welterweight champion, Prograis, has had problems of his own, losing his last two fights. Many boxing fans believe that the 36-year-old Regis is washed and will not be able to turn things around. However, the southpaw Prograis still has his power, and that makes him a threat to Diaz Jr.
“Regis is a big guy and a strong competitor. But I see a lot of flaws in his game, and I know 100% Jo Jo Diaz is a very dangerous fighter,” said Diaz Jr. “That’s what I am right now. I’m going to come in on fight night at 100% and execute my game plan and come out victorious on Saturday night.
Who Has More Left?
“He’s [Prograis] a big guy, but I’m feeling good at this weight. I’m filling out, feeling good, feeling strong, and I’m ready to go,” said Diaz Jr. about his fight against Regis.
Prograis-Diaz will come down to which of the two has more left in the tank. Regis’ last true win came three years ago against Jose Zepeda in 2022. Technically, his last victory was against Danielito Zorrilla in 2023, but that was a controversial 12-round split decision.
