Canelo Alvarez Vs. William Scull Preview: Will Canelo’s Patience Pay Off Against The Tricky Cuban Style Of Scull?

Canelo Alvarez says he’s going to be “patient” against IBF super middleweight champion William Scull on Saturday night because he expects him to be difficult to hit in their headliner on DAZN PPV on May 3rd at The Venue in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The event starts at 7:00 p.m. ET / 4:00 pm. PT.

Canelo (62-2-2, 39 KOs) will have his WBC, WBA, and WBO 168-lb titles at stake going up against IBF champion Scull (23-0, 9 KOs).

It would help if Canelo lets his hands go a little more to try and get to Scull because he’s going to be throwing a lot of jabs. Scull won’t take chances.

Canelo’s Game Plan

“Saul, the Cuban style can be very difficult, very tricky. These are savvy fighters with a big amateur pedigree,” said commentator Sergio Mora to DAZN Boxing, talking to Canelo Alvarez about how he’ll handle the fighting style of Cuban William Scull on Saturday night.

“How do you plan on stopping him and getting him to fight? Do you think you’re going to have to chase him around, and this is going to go for the distance?”

“I think it’s patience. Be patient at the beginning of the fight. Do my job and find a way to go in and do my job. It’s all about patience,” said Canelo.

It’s going to be difficult for Canelo to throw combinations against Scull because he’s going to be on the move, changing angles, and not letting him have a stationary target for long. Canelo will have to load up on his single shots if he wants to get a knockout

“It’s been three years since we’ve seen you collect a knockout. Everyone is wondering, ‘Can Canelo still knock guys out?’” said Chris Mannix. “You’ve beaten guys up, you’ve knocked them down, but you haven’t put them out. Are you anxious at all?”

“No, you win the way you need to win. Sometimes, you try so hard to knock out somebody, and it’s even harder,” said Canelo. “Like Berlanga in my last fight, he tried to survive, and it’s very difficult, even more so because they make the fight even harder. I’m going to do my job, and if the knockout comes, welcome.”
