Robert Garcia On Haney-Garcia Rematch: “Still A Big Fight” Despite Ryan Garcia’s Loss And Devin Haney’s “Running” Against Ramirez

Jose Ramirez’s trainer, Robert Garcia, says the Devin Haney vs. Ryan Garcia rematch will still be a “big fight” despite Ryan’s 12-round unanimous decision loss to Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero last Friday night at Times Square in New York.
Ryan’s loss isn’t the worry. Haney’s incredibly boring performance against Ramirez is the real problem. Devin was his usual non-engaging self, but he was much worse than before. You could tell that his loss to Ryan Garcia has left him fearful of getting hit. He looks like he doesn’t trust his chin.
Time for a Purge
It’s Turki Alalshikh’s call. If he still wants to make the Garcia vs. Haney rematch for October, he can do so. It would probably still do good numbers, but would be seen as more of a business-level, Misfits-type of fight.
If you’re Turki, casting Garcia and Haney adrift would be a good idea. Forget about them and focus on the entertaining welterweights. Let the sharks feed on Ryan and Haney. Put the energy into staging fights between talents like Boots and Norman Jr.
Fans don’t take Haney and Ryan seriously as top welterweights after their performances. Neither would beat the top contenders and be ruined by the champions, Brian Norman Jr, Jaron Ennis, and Mario Barrios. They’re not rugged enough.
Rolly (17-2, 13 KOs) took the fight out of Garcia (24-1, 20 KOs) early in the contest by knocking him down in the second round with a hard left hook. He didn’t have to do much more after that to maintain the lead because Ryan was unwilling to take any risks.
Garcia looked worried about Romero’s power, which is understandable given the severity of he knockdown. That shot would have knocked over a truck.
Garcia: Haney “Ran”
“That was Devin’s game plan. I don’t say he was boxing because in most rounds, I call that running. But that was his plan, he got the decision, and what can we say?” said trainer Robert Garcia to Fight Hub TV about his fighter, Jose Ramirez, losing to the non-engaging Devin Haney last Friday night at Times Square.
“Anthony Joshua lost his last fight and so did Tyson Fury, and if they fight each other, it’s going to be huge,” said Robert when asked if the Ryan Garcia vs. Devin Haney rematch can no longer happen due to Ryan’s loss to Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero last Friday. “Haney vs. Garcia is still going to be a big fight. I think they should still do it. Too big. Yeah, I think they should still do it.”
